The Society for Human Resource Management has pulled its advertising from Fox News in light of several allegations concerning sexual harassment of women who worked at the network.
SHRM announced its decision on its Twitter account Tuesday. The group did not provide a reason in the tweet, but a spokeswoman told CEO Update the decision followed a news report about settlements Fox News reached with women who had filed sexual harassment lawsuits. The association made no further statements.
The New York Times recently reported that the network's parent company and popular conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly had paid $13 million in settlements in recent years to at least five women who claimed O'Reilly sexually harassed them.
Fox News has been dogged by allegations of sexual harassment in recent months. Former Chairman Roger Ailes resigned last July after several women accused him of inappropriate conduct, including former Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson.
The fallout from the most recent scandal has been swift. Fifty-two companies and organizations have pulled their ads from O'Reilly's show, ABC News reported. So far SHRM is the only organization to have yanked its ads entirely from the network. http://abcn.ws/2o1wHim
SHRM has had a good relationship with Fox News in the past. Besides advertising on the network, the association invited Fox News anchor Chris Wallace to speak at its Employment Law & Legislative Conference in March. However, the group also drafts model policies for HR departments to adopt, including sexual harassment policies.
